Freeze-dried vs frozen dog ice cream

Two ways to keep a cold-treat idea around, and why one of them lives in a pantry.

Updated

Freeze-dried vs frozen dog ice cream comes down to water. Frozen treats keep their water as ice and need a freezer. Freeze-dried treats have most of it removed, so they sit in a bag at room temperature and do not melt.

What freeze drying is

According to University of Minnesota Extension (opened 2026-10-16), freeze drying removes water by sublimation: the water goes from ice straight to vapor without becoming liquid. The food is frozen, then dried under a vacuum with mild heat in two drying stages. The page notes that freeze-dried food needs moisture-proof, sealed packaging because it absorbs moisture easily. That is why a freeze-dried treat is light, crisp and shelf stable, and why you should reseal the bag.

Why Pup-Ornaut does not melt

Pup-Ornaut is freeze-dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. With most of the water gone, there is no ice to melt, and it does not need refrigeration. Keep the bag resealed in a cool, dry place.

What is not different

Either kind is a treat, not a complete diet, and either should be a small share of the day. Both Pup-Ornaut flavors contain dairy, and Banana Peanut Butter also contains peanuts, so they are not for every dog. Ask your vet if you are unsure. See how to serve for serving notes and can dogs eat ice cream for the ice cream question.
