Halloween dog treats

Keep the candy bowl out of reach, and give your co-pilot a treat of their own.

Halloween dog treats are the answer to a simple problem: the night is full of candy that is not for dogs, and your dog still wants in on the fun. Below are the common Halloween hazards, then our Halloween pick, freeze-dried ghost and pumpkin shapes that sit in a treat pouch without melting.

Halloween hazards for dogs

The ASPCA's Halloween safety tips (ASPCA, Halloween Safety Tips, opened 2026-10-16) include:

  • Chocolate and candy. The ASPCA flags every kind of chocolate as a danger to dogs and cats, with dark and baking chocolate called out most. Keep the bowl up high.
  • Xylitol. The ASPCA warns about sugar-free candy made with this sweetener.
  • Lit jack-o-lanterns. A pet can tip a candlelit pumpkin, which the ASPCA names as a fire and burn risk.
  • Costumes. The ASPCA says a costume should not limit movement, sight or breathing, and to check it for small parts that could be chewed off and become a choking hazard.
  • Wires and decorations. The ASPCA's list includes keeping wires out of reach, and it notes small accessories can be a choking hazard.
  • Visitors. The ASPCA notes that a stream of strangers in costumes can be stressful, and suggests a quiet room away from the front door for most pets during trick-or-treat hours.

If your dog gets into something, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center.

A treat that is theirs

Give your dog a treat made for dogs, so they are not tempted by the human bowl. Pup-Ornaut Pumpkin & Apple is freeze-dried dog ice cream shaped like ghosts and pumpkins. It is shelf stable, light and crunchy, and made in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. The ingredients are apples, pumpkin puree and nonfat Greek yogurt, in that order. It contains dairy, so it is not for dogs that have trouble with dairy, and it has no peanuts. It is a treat, not a complete diet. Read how to serve for our serving notes by flavor. It sells all year, so the ghosts can come back out any time.

Because it does not melt, it rides in a pocket or a treat pouch for a neighborhood walk. Offer one piece at a time, supervise, and keep fresh water out.

The Spooky Snack Pack

For a bigger gift, the Spooky Snack Pack pairs the Pumpkin & Apple ice cream with Cheddar Cheese Bites and Freeze-Dried Beef Heart. It is $36, a one-time purchase only. Details for the bites and beef heart live on sniffandshift.com.

Halloween picks

Two Halloween picks. The ice cream and the cheddar bites in the pack contain dairy.

Questions

Can dogs eat Halloween candy?

The ASPCA's Halloween tips warn about chocolate and about sugar-free candy made with xylitol. Keep the candy out of reach, and if your dog eats some, call your vet or ASPCA Animal Poison Control.

Is Pumpkin & Apple safe for every dog?

We cannot say that. It contains dairy, and every dog is different. Ask your vet if you are unsure.

Is Pumpkin & Apple only sold at Halloween?

No. It is part of the regular lineup all year. Halloween is just its big night.
